The Cost of a litter
The price of puppies
There has been a huge amount of media attention on the price of a puppy and during Covid, when the world and his wife wanted a puppy, the price shot through the roof, well at least they did from many people who perhaps were just breeding to make money! My prices didn’t change! First time breeders saturated the market with little or no consideration as to the homes they were accepting for their puppies, offering no initial or on-going support and raising poorly fed, socialised, and cared for puppies.
There were horrendous stories of people being conned out of their money and being sold a certain type of puppy, when, in reality, it was something totally different. Being told a price and when going to collect, the price had doubled.
When you make the decision to go with a RESPONSIBLE BREEDER, you are making a responsible choice. The puppy that comes home with you, will be your companion and house mate for up to 15 years. They will provide you with companionship, love, loyalty, a reason to get out and exercise and the inclusion into a group of society that love, care, and enjoy dogs and all that they entail.
RESPONSIBLE BREEDERS raise their dogs with the utmost consideration to their health, not just physical and mental, but emotional as well. They are brought up within a family environment, protected from harm, abuse and ill health. They are constantly socialised, desensitised, trained and fed on the very best diet, which allows them to grow and mature in the correct way.
RESPONSIBLE BREEDERS always genetically health test the parents for all the conditions that their specific breed may be prone too, they only breed from genetically CLEAR mums and dads, ensuring they are not interbed and have a low Coi (co-efficient of inbreeding).
Why do puppies cost so much?
RESPONSIBLE BREEDERS raise their mums (and dads)for approx. 2 years prior to making the decision to breed from them. So, feeding, training, grooming, walking, health testing etc. They take into consideration, their temperament, their confirmation (how they are physically put together), their health tests and their biddability (how well they interact with the family and other animals). Once they have passed all the above, the breeder then searches for a mate, who has to clear the same considerations.
The following are some (not all) of the costs involved in breeding and rearing one litter: -
Stud Fee Approx. £500
Pregnancy Scanning Approx. £50
Pregnancy & Whelping supplements Approx. £45
Whelping Equipment and consumables Approx. £400
Food for Mum and Puppies x 6 (18 weeks) Approx. £500
Heating (heat Pad) & Electric (washing) Approx. £250
Supplements and Worming Approx. £50
Microchipping Approx. £84 - £126
Puppy Packs and Information Approx. £30 per puppy
Breeders time – working on Living Wage at £9.50, includes, telephone calls, Facebook updates, Photos, emails and messages – working on a 16-hour day (it is often more than that) for just the 18 weeks Approx. 19152
FOR A LITTER OF 6 TOTAL £21253
The above costings do not consider the purchasing, raising, training, health testing and keeping of the mums for their lives.
When you consider that your dog will be by your side for up to 13 years or over, the purchase price of a puppy from a RESPONSIBLE BREEDER will set you back £192 per year or less. That’s 52p per day.
REMEMBER; Behind every well-bred puppy is a breeder who lost sleep, missed important events, cancelled holidays, and made sacrifices to raise their puppies the right way. A puppy is a piece of a breeder’s legacy, heart, and hard work.
If you are lucky enough to be entrusted with one, it’s an honour.
